How It Started
TOKYO STORY began with a very coincidental encounter in the spring of 2023. While helping a BBQ team from Japan at a cookoff in Austin, Yo Shimizu met five big, tough, tattoo-covered deputy sheriffs who were working security at the event. They struck up a conversation after discovering the deputies were planning a trip to Japan. Just two months later, they reunited—this time in Tokyo. Yo took them to Akihabara, where he watched these Texas law enforcement officers light up with joy at the sights, sounds, food, and energy of Tokyo’s pop culture. In that moment, Yo was convinced he needed to bring that spirit back to the U.S. And thus, TOKYO STORY was born.
